A Prayer for Sleep and Peace at Night

The ceiling at 3am is where worries hold their conferences. This prayer is for handing over the night watch.

Lord, the day is done and I wasn't enough for all of it — but You were, and You'll be enough for tomorrow too. I lie down in peace. Keep the watch tonight. Amen.

A fuller prayer

Father, I bring You the day — the parts I'm proud of, the parts I'd redo, the conversations still playing on loop. I'm clocking off now; the night shift is Yours. You never slumber, so one of us may as well sleep. Quiet the replays and the rehearsals. Stand guard over my home and the people in it, near and far. If I wake in the small hours, let my first thought find You already awake, and let me hand back whatever I've picked up. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. Amen.

Scripture to hold on to

I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

PSALM 4:8 · BSB

He who watches over you will not slumber; behold, the Keeper of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

PSALM 121:3–4 · BSB

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

MATTHEW 11:28 · BSB

How to pray this

Make it the last thing after the phone goes dark, not before one more scroll. Some of the faithful keep a notepad by the bed: worries that wake you get written down and formally handed over until morning.

Don’t carry this alone

The chain is small and forming — which means your request won't be lost in a crowd. Real people will pray this with you, for your situation, by name — and you’ll see each one happen.

Ask the chain to pray with you

Or join free and pray for others — praying earns prayers.

Common questions

What should I do when I wake up anxious at 3am?

Don't fight the waking — use it. A short, repeated line ('You are here; I can sleep') beats an argument with your own thoughts. Chronic insomnia is also worth a doctor's visit.

Is there a scripture to fall asleep to?

Psalm 4:8 and Psalm 23 have tucked in more believers than any lullaby. Slow, half-whispered repetition is the ancient method.
