A Prayer for a Grieving Friend

When a friend is grieving, most of us feel useless. Praying for them is not a substitute for the casserole and the doorstep visit — it's the engine for both.

Father, be near my friend today. Carry what they can't, send people at the empty hours, and make me one of them — showing up without needing to say the perfect thing. Amen.

A fuller prayer

Lord, my friend is walking through the valley and I can't walk it for them. So I ask You to do what I can't: be present in their empty kitchen, in the car outside the church, at three in the morning when the house is too quiet. Give them permission to grieve at their own speed and protection from everyone's helpful timelines. And use me, Lord — for meals, for silence, for the six-month phone call after the crowd has moved on. Teach me that showing up beats summing up. Amen.

Scripture to hold on to

How to pray this

Put the anniversary and the birthday in your calendar now — grief's loneliest days come after everyone else has moved on. 'I prayed for you this morning' is a complete and excellent message to send.

Don’t carry this alone

The chain is small and forming — which means your request won't be lost in a crowd. Real people will pray this with you, for your situation, by name — and you’ll see each one happen.

Ask the chain to pray with you

Common questions

What should I say to a grieving friend?

Less than you think. 'I'm so sorry. I loved them too. I'm here.' Then be there. Avoid explanations — grief needs presence, not theology.

Can I ask others to pray for my friend?

Yes — first name only, with their dignity guarded. It's one of the kindest things you can do from any distance.
