A Prayer for a Troubled Family
Family can be the deepest comfort and the oldest wound in the same afternoon. This prayer is for households in conflict and tables with empty chairs.
Father, You see what our family has become and what it could be. Cool the tempers, soften the grudges, and give one of us — maybe me — the humility to take the first step back. Amen.
A fuller prayer
Lord, families are Your idea, and ours is hurting. You know the history — the words said at that dinner, the years of silence, the ones who won't be in the room at Christmas. I don't ask You to declare a winner. I ask You to make peace possible: to cool what's hot, to loosen what's hardened, and to guard the children who watch all of it. Show me the step that's mine to take — the call, the apology, the boundary, the invitation — and give me the courage to take it without waiting for anyone to deserve it. Be the peace of this family until we find our own. Amen.

How to pray this
Pray for each family member by name, including the difficult ones — especially the difficult ones. Peace-making sometimes means reconciliation and sometimes means healthy distance with a soft heart; ask God for the wisdom to know which season you're in.
Don’t carry this alone

Common questions
How do I pray for family members who've hurt me?
Start where you honestly are: 'Lord, I don't want good things for them yet — help me want to want them.' God works with honest prayers faster than with polished ones.
Is it okay to keep my distance and still pray for them?
Yes. Forgiveness is commanded; unlimited access is not. You can bless someone from a boundary.
