A Prayer for a Wayward Son or Daughter

There's a particular ache reserved for parents of adult children who've wandered — from the faith, from the family, from their own best self. The father in Luke 15 watched the road. This prayer is for the ones still watching.

Father, You know where my child is tonight, even when I don't. Keep them alive, keep them findable, and keep a road open between us. I'm watching the road. Amen.

A fuller prayer

Lord, I've said everything I know how to say to them, so now I'm saying it to You. Protect my child in places I can't follow. Put people in their path who tell them the truth kindly. Let the far country disappoint them gently — enough to turn them, not enough to break them. Guard me from the bitterness that would close the door they might one day walk back through, and from the despair that stops watching the road. You are a Father who runs to meet returners; teach me to wait like You do. I don't ask for a timetable. I ask for a homecoming. Amen.
