A Prayer for Protection

Every parent at a window, every spouse hearing a late siren, knows this prayer before learning it. It's the oldest kind: cover them.

Lord, be a shield around the people I love — where they drive, where they work, where they sleep. What I can't see, You see. Cover them. Amen.

A fuller prayer

Father, I name them before You now — each face, each front door. Be their shield and their shelter: on the roads, in the dark car parks, in the small decisions that turn out to matter. Guard their bodies from harm, their minds from fear, and their hearts from the slower dangers that never make the news. Where I have no reach, You have no limits. And guard me from the kind of worry that mistakes itself for protection — watching over them is Your job tonight; loving them is mine. Under the shadow of Your wings we settle. Amen.
